Social media (SM) has been part of the web for many years now but has really become important to businesses in the last few years. Recently it has become even more important as the major search engines are looking for companies that maintain a presence on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube (in addition to having a main web site). Since I currently work for one of the major search engines, I can vouch for how important it is in terms of search engine result placement.
